On September 7th, 2018 we held the 5th Annual Kevin Woyjeck Memorial Saltwater Fishing Tournament. This even is hosted on the first Friday of September every year in honor of Kevin’s birthday. This year was a huge success, we received so many sponsors this year – we had our biggest profit year yet! We had 100+ fisherman and their families showing up to fish and have fun in Kevin’s name. The fish came out to play too, some 20lb+ fish were hauled in. Our reception at the Boathouse on the Bay located at Alamitos Bay went well also, our raffles are always a big hit! A sponsored fire explorer won the Angler only raffle prize, a pelican cooler!

July 14th , 2018 was the Grand Opening of the LACoFD Fire Museum. To highlight the rich history of the LACoFD, and its evolution. It now features a wildland fire section that hangs a huge banner displaying the crew names and houses one of the original GMH crew buggies that Kevin used during his season. The event also helped us raise awareness about our nonprofit and raise funds from tabling with tshirts; we also received a huge donation from LACO Fire Explorer Academy Class 61 who raised funds for us on their own! Amazing explorers gave us a donation!

June 30th 2018 marks the five year anniversary of the crew. The Kevin Woyjeck Explorers for Life Association is proud to say we have done almost $250,000 worth of donations in Kevin’s name since his passing, and we are beyond thankful for those who have helped us make it through these years.

Fireman Jose Zambrano

Run to Remember (Memorial Run) was a weeklong event from June 23rd – June 30th 2018.  El Segundo Fireman Jose Zambrano ran from from the new LACoFD Fire Museum in Bellflower, CA to the final fatality site of the GMH at the Granite Mountain Hotshots Memorial State Park in Yarnell, AZ! Fireman Joe ran a total of 370 miles. He ran through the desert and up mountains to honor the men, our Kevin, and bring awareness to their passing and the state park.

On June 2nd, 2018 Joe Woyjeck had his retirement part with Tom Fordham. To honor Joe’s career at 37 years ending as a captain, and Tim’s long career ending as a battalion chief! It was hosted at the new LACoFD Fire Museum, and all proceeds from tickets sales and raffles were donated to US! We raised a lot of funds from raffle tickets to win a car, which was then auctioned off for a grand amount! One big party for a big cause!

On October 8th 2017 the movie “Only The Brave” premiered. “Only The Brave” is based on the Granite Mountain Hotshots; its educational with the telling the beginning of the crew, what their careers consisted of, and how they built a brotherhood on the fire line.  It also reflects on their passing and helps show the magnitude of their honorable sacrifices to save Yarnell, AZ form destruction. You can find Kevin towards the end of the movie sporting a red Angels baseball hat.

Anna and Joe Woyjeck are standing next to the newly dedicated sign for their son, Kevin Woyjeck.

On October 14th, 2016 the State of California dedicated a sign honoring hotshot firefighter Kevin Woyjeck.  The sign says, “Hotshot Firefighter Kevin J. Woyjeck Memorial Highway.” This sign can be found on the four mile stretch where the 405, 604, and 22 all meet, which is a heavily trafficked location on the freeway. This sign carries on the memory and legacy of Kevin in his hometown.
